Become a Speaker
WordCamp Montreal will try to offer a wide variety of talks and discussions about and around WordPress. The actual schedule and speakers list is still up in the air at this point but we are looking for people excited about WordPress to show our attendants a good time and teach them stuff. Add your topic/presentation suggestions in the comments below.
What we’re looking for
The ideal speaker has a topic they know a lot and are passionate about (see topic ideas list below) that they can present with coherent slides and explanations. Your topic should be something generally interesting about WordPress: how to do something, something not to do, something amazing. We know you want to show us what you’ve made with WordPress and we want to see it, so include it in your presentation as an example of what you’re talking about, but make sure that you also explain how you did it. Give us some code examples or if nothing else include 10 important lessons you learned with tips to avoid the problems you encountered. Hopefully the talks at WordCamp Montreal can be fun and educational at the same time.

The subject and description you propose doesn’t have to be final, but should give us a sense of what you have to offer and why you’d be a good choice. If you are pro at WordPress but aren’t sure what to talk about check out the list below, maybe there is something you can tackle there.
Topics and Tracks
User and Developer tracks: Something for everyone
WordCamp Montreal will conceptually split its talks into two tracks/streams: Users/Design and Development/Code. The idea being to always have one of each running on one of the tracks. When thinking about a potential talk consider which track it might fit in and how the audience might affect your talk. We do not want to limit or control your talk based on these two categories, but rather just hope you’ll consider your audience. Some tech in a design talk is expected and encouraged, just as throwing a bone to the noobs is greatly appreciated if you can work it into your development talk.
Topics we hope to cover
The topics below are things we are hoping to have covered in our event. It is in no way final or exthaustive! Just a first draft of what we’re looking for from speakers. (striken through subjects are already being presented on, but aren’t technically off limits if you have a good idea).

- BuddyPress explanation + tech + example
- WordPress Security – tips, tools, stories/examples of being hacked
- Bilingual/Translated sites with WordPress
- Theming seminar (template tags/hierarchy for dummies)
- Speed/optimization seminar (WP side, templates+plugins)
- Intro to apache/mysql config/optimization (i.e. server optimization for wordpress)
- SEO/monetization/promo seminar
- Extending WP with Custom Plugins – tech + examples
- i18n and Translation seminar/explanation
- panel/debate about GPL in WP Plugins and themes (I’d love this on stage with clappometer)

Notre objectif est d’avoir une variété de sujets de discussion à propos de WordPress. Si vous êtes intéressé(e)s à faire une présentation, utilisez les commentaires sur cette page pour nous faire une suggestion. Les présentations peuvent être en français, en anglais ou les deux! Ce que nous recherchons
Le conférencier idéal a un sujet qui le passionne et le connaît bien(voir la liste des sujets suggérés ci-dessous). Il peut présenter son sujet avec des diapositives et des explications claires. Le sujet doit être intéressant et axé sur WordPress. Par ex.: comment faire quelque chose, ce qu’il faut éviter ou comment obtenir un résultat impressionnant. Nous savons que vous voulez nous montrer ce que vous avez fait avec WordPress (et nous voulons voir !), donc incluez-le dans votre présentation des exemples de ce dont vous parlez, en vous assurant que vous expliquez aussi comment vous l’avez fait. Donnez-nous quelques exemples de code, ou si vous n’avez rien d’autre, donnez-nous les 10 leçons à retenir et des conseils pour éviter les problèmes que vous avez rencontré. Nous espérons que les conférences et discussions au WordCamp Montréal seront à la fois amusantes et enrichissantes.

Sujets et salles
Utilisateurs et développeurs : de tout, pour tous
WordCamp Montréal sera divisée en deux types de conférences : Utilisation/Design et Développement/Code. L’idée est d’avoir toujours les deux types de conférence en cours . Si vous pensez tenir une présentation, déterminez dans quel groupe il doit se faire, et de quelle façon votre auditoire réagira. Nous ne voulons pas limiter ou contrôler votre présentation sur la base de ces deux catégories mais nous espérons que vous considérerez cet aspect de la conférence. Un peu de tech dans une présentation orientée design sera apprécié et espéré, de même qu’un effort pour rendre votre discours accessible aux débutants dans une présentation axée sur la programmation.

La liste ci-dessous contient tous les sujets que nous souhaiterions couvrir lors de l’évènement. Nous sommes bien sûr ouverts à de nouvelles idées mais si vous pouviez limiter votre présentation à un seul des sujets suivant nous pourront être sûrs que tous les sujets cruciaux seront suffisement développés lors de la conférence.

I could have used a WPMU explanation + tech + example a couple of weeks ago. Took forever to figure out. Maybe I should’ve just read the documentation :P
Nous accompagnons le ministère de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du sport dans l’aménagement d’une communauté de pratiques inhérente à un cours obligatoire en 5e secondaire (sept 2010). Nous utilisons BuddyPress pour que chaque C.S., chaque école, chaque classe, chaque prof et chaque élève disposent des outils dont il a besoin. Nous avons programmé une console de gestion des permissions et accès pouvant aussi créer en lots des blogues.
Notre présentation pourra illustrer les enjeux techniques autant que ceux au niveau du design pédagogique… À noter que le projet a débuté avec Lyceum et que nous avons dû migrer sur BuddyPress en cours de route. Cette migration a représenté tout un défi… Enfin, la formation des enseignants à ce nouveau cours se fait aussi par l’installation BuddyPress. Nous avons produit des tutoriels pour plusieurs projets de ce genre (car nous en avons deux ou trois autres, actuellement, http://www.opossum.ca/2009/04/10/opossum-lance-9-tutoriels-buddypress/

What “level” of knowledge would the attendees have? For example, would a speech about “How to turn Wordpress in a fully-functional CMS with extensive use of custom fields and advanced looping” be too much of conquered grounds for the audience?
How long are the presentations and is it presentations like at a conference or introducing and leading a discussion like in most camps? (seems like it’s the former but asking anyway just in case)

@Jeremy – CMS building with Custom Fields definitely is not too simple for WCMTL. We want to have presentations that cover all levels of knowledge (except maybe “intro to posting and making links”). I think what you’re describing would fall in the “Extending WP with Custom Plugins – tech + examples” category, which can definitely have multiple presentations. If it was relatively simple it could go in the “users/design” track instead of the “developers” track.
@Patrick – We haven’t come up with set times but IMHO 45 min is a pretty good length for such things. We’ll probably also have opportunities for very short presentations at some point but for now we’re focussing on the big ones.
They will be conference-style presentations with questions unless otherwise noted. Discussions are welcome and hopefully we can have BOF style meetings at some point.
I just added sections to this page and the schedule page about how we will be having 2 tracks: dev/user-design, and how that effects talk considerations.

I would be pleased to speak in the User/Design track. Suggested title of my talk would be: “Using Wordpress As An Integral Part Of A Social Media Marketing Strategy”. I would explain how I use Wordpress to grow my business through video blogging and linking to Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.

I’m suggesting a talk in the User/Design track: “The Perfect Migration to Wordpress: Why and How”.
Kim Vallee would join me for the talk.
Kim has a large blog: At Home with Kim Vallee. She was on another platform (subText), had a lot of posts, images, etc. and was changing URLs. She also wanted a new design while adding sophisticated features on a new design.
Tentatively, this talk will address:
– Before
– Why move to Wordpress?
– After
– Migration tools and techniques
– Migration checklist
– The perfect migration
I also plan to open source the conversion tool I developed. It could be extended by the community to support additional platforms and to add further improvements.

I’d love to give a presentation on WordPress Security. I run a web development firm (WebDevStudios.com) in New Jersey and we’ve worked on many hacked WordPress sites. I could show examples of hacked sites, share tips and plugins for keeping WordPress secure, and talk about my experiences with WordPress and security overall.
I just gave a presentation on Advanced Thesis Techniques and Tricks at WordCamp Mid-Atlantic and had a blast!
